National union leaders will hold a news conference at Ottawa’s Rogers Centre on Thursday, October 29, to discuss proposed federal changes affecting collective bargaining and the right to strike.
The event begins at 11:30 a.m. and will feature Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Canadian General Vice-President David Chartrand, and United Steelworkers National Director for Canada Marty Warren.
In an advisory issued October 28, the Canadian Labour Congress said the leaders would urge MPs and Prime Minister Mark Carney to protect workers’ rights as Parliament considers Bill C-39.
The CLC argues that the proposed changes could weaken collective bargaining by encouraging employers to wait for government intervention rather than negotiate agreements. These are the organization’s stated concerns about the legislation.
The news conference coincides with the CLC’s Canadian Council meeting in Ottawa.
