These standards guide Eye on Ottawa. Publisher Mubarak Gabaldein is responsible for editorial decisions and responding to concerns at info@eyeonottawa.ca.

Accuracy and sources

We aim to verify factual claims before publication, prioritize original documents and direct sources, and link to supporting information where available. Claims from campaigns, businesses and organizations must be attributed. A press release or interview is a source, not independent confirmation. We identify uncertainty and distinguish allegations from established findings.

Fairness and accountability

We seek relevant context and a reasonable opportunity to respond when reporting serious criticism. Headlines should accurately reflect the article. Authors should be identified; an Eye on Ottawa editorial byline remains accountable to the publisher and does not imply a larger reporting team.

News, opinion and promotional material

Opinion and commentary should be clearly labelled. Campaign submissions, supplied statements and sponsored content should be identified prominently. Payment or commercial support must not be presented as independent reporting. Publication of a candidate profile does not itself constitute an endorsement.

Conflicts of interest

Relevant personal, political, employment and financial relationships should be disclosed with the affected coverage. Where a relationship compromises independent reporting, the material should be assigned to another contributor, clearly presented as commentary, or withheld pending review.

AI and images

Some news briefs are prepared and published using AI-assisted or automated tools, drawing on linked primary sources. This does not mean a reporter witnessed an event, conducted an interview or independently confirmed every source claim. The publisher remains responsible for accuracy, corrections and editorial decisions. Automated summaries can contain errors; readers can report concerns through our correction process. AI-generated visuals are labelled as illustrative and must not be presented as documentary photographs. We do not use police, municipal or government logos in AI-generated editorial banners. Supplied campaign and promotional images must be identified so readers can distinguish them from independent reporting.

Corrections and updates

To request a correction, email the article link, the disputed statement and any supporting evidence to info@eyeonottawa.ca, using the subject “Correction request”. We review concerns and correct confirmed factual errors. Substantive corrections should carry a dated note explaining what changed. New developments should be identified as updates. Minor spelling or formatting fixes may be made without a note. We retain accurate publication dates and do not use template dates to imply an older reporting history.

Complaints

If you disagree with an editorial decision, explain your concern to the publisher at the same email address. We consider factual accuracy, fairness, privacy and relevant evidence when reviewing complaints.
