OTTAWA HISTORY
From Wilderness to Capital: Ottawa's Enduring Story
Before becoming the bustling capital we know, Ottawa was a rugged wilderness. Its name originates from the Algonquin word "adawe," meaning "to trade," reflecting the Indigenous heritage of the region. Originally Bytown, it evolved from a vibrant lumber town to a strategic hub.
Queen Victoria famously chose Ottawa as the capital of the Province of Canada in 1857, a decision cemented with Confederation in 1867. Today, the vibrant National Capital Region boasts a population of over 1.4 million, a testament to its dynamic growth and rich history.
