Ottawa is set to make history, with women expected to form a majority on City Council for the first time following the October 26 municipal election.
Unofficial results show three newcomers joining 21 returning ward councillors. All three newcomers are women: Chelsea Walton in Stittsville, Joanne Chianello in Kitchissippi and Erin Coffin in Kanata South. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe also won another term.
The results mark a significant milestone for women’s representation at City Hall, even as most council seats remain with familiar faces. Two returning councillors—Riley Brockington and David Brown—were acclaimed.
The City’s figures show 314,393 ballots cast among 868,248 eligible electors, a turnout of about 36.21 per cent.
Results remain unofficial pending the City Clerk’s declaration, expected on or before October 30 after an external audit. The new council’s four-year term begins November 15, 2026.
