Ottawa Police Urge Greater Road Safety Awareness as Daylight Saving Time Ends

OTTAWA, November 2, 2026 — As Ottawa adjusts to the end of daylight saving time, residents are being reminded to take additional precautions on local roads, particularly during evening commuting hours when reduced daylight can make pedestrians and cyclists less visible.

Clocks moved back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, marking the return to Eastern Standard Time. The seasonal change means sunset now occurs earlier by the clock, increasing the likelihood that residents will travel home from work, school or other activities after dark.

Ahead of the time change, the Ottawa Police Service issued a cycling safety reminder on October 30, encouraging residents to improve their visibility during periods of reduced daylight.

Safety precautions for road users

Pedestrians can improve their visibility by wearing bright or reflective clothing, using designated crossings and remaining attentive to approaching vehicles, particularly in poorly illuminated areas.

Cyclists should check that their bicycles have appropriate front and rear lights and reflectors. Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act sets lighting requirements for bicycles used between half an hour before sunset and half an hour after sunrise.

Motorists are encouraged to exercise additional caution at intersections, adjust their speed to visibility conditions and remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists during busy evening travel periods.

Ottawa Police promote cycling visibility

Ottawa Police announced a Lights on Bikes event for Tuesday, November 3, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Corktown Footbridge. Free bicycle lights and reflective items will be available to help cyclists stay visible during darker commuting hours.

The return to standard time is a timely reminder for everyone sharing Ottawa’s roads to remain attentive and adapt their travel habits to changing light conditions.
