Ottawa residents reviewing household expenses should check whether their 2025 tax return included the information needed for the 2026 Ontario Trillium Benefit.
The CRA says payments for the July 2026 to June 2027 benefit year are based on the 2025 return. The benefit combines provincial sales-tax support with eligible energy and property-tax credits. Qualifying for one component can be enough to receive a payment.
CRA instructions distinguish the components: sales-tax-credit eligibility is assessed using the return, while applicants seeking the energy and property-tax credit must complete the relevant parts of Form ON-BEN. Both eligible renters and homeowners may qualify, depending on their circumstances.
The Northern Ontario component has separate geographic requirements; an Ottawa address does not qualify as Northern Ontario.
Amounts and payment arrangements vary. Check your CRA notice and official eligibility guidance rather than assuming a maximum amount applies to your family. If information was missed, consult the CRA’s instructions for prior-year applications or return adjustments. This is an existing-benefit explainer, not a new payment announcement.
