Before opening a shop, café or service business in Ottawa, owners should check which permissions apply to their activity and location. Ontario directs entrepreneurs to BizPaL, a free tool that filters federal, provincial and municipal permits by business type and address.
The City says some businesses require a municipal licence. Depending on the activity, an application can involve zoning, building, health, fire or other reviews. The Business Licensing Centre coordinates the approvals required for the application.
Timelines vary. Ottawa says many licences can be issued within six weeks, while some take minutes; incomplete information or unmet requirements can delay approval. That is a planning estimate, not a promised opening date.
For food businesses, the City also points to its Business Ambassador Service and online Food Premises Application.
Start with the official checklist, confirm requirements for your specific premises, and allow time for reviews before announcing an opening. This guide summarizes existing services; it does not announce a new licensing rule.
